One of the main concerns on the minds of many families with small children arriving in Warsaw is locating a good preschool offering an English-speaking curriculum. Of most importance to these parents is that the selected school offers a safe environment, and that the children be given the opportunity to learn and play in a cheerful and comforting setting. Warsaw has several excellent English-speaking preschool options. All of these schools present curriculums conducted exclusively in English (with Polish and other cultures and languages introduced on occasion).

The American School of Warsaw - located at Warszawska 202, KONSTANCIN

Curriculum: Follows a U.S. curriculum, using a “whole child” approach to address social, emotional and physical growth. Emphasis is on developing independence and addressing individual needs.

Tuition: 7852.00 USD per year, 500.00 USD registration fee.

Ages/classes: 4 year-olds (must be four by September 30) - children do need to be toilet-trained. Two classes of 15 children per class, one teacher and one aide per class. Classes run from 9:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., beginning the end of August, ending middle June.

Meals: No meals or snacks are provided, but children can buy a school lunch separately.

Credentialing: All teachers have U.S. certification.

Environment: The American school is a large facility on the northern end of Konstancin, encompassing grades pre-K through 12. The two pre-K classes are located inside the school, so this is very much a scholastic environment. The rooms resemble elementary school rooms, but are colorful and energetic. Children have use of the elementary playground, with play equipment.

Security: Visitors driving onto the campus must pass a security checkpoint, and must obtain a visitor’s badge upon entering the building. The entire campus, including the playground, is fenced and locked.

The British School - located at Dabrowskiego 84/90, MOKOTOW

Curriculum: The pre-nursery offers theme-based play, emphasizing creativity and individuality. Nursery follows a UK curriculum, with computer room and library use.

Tuition: Pre-nursery is 690 UK pounds per term, for three days a week minimum attendance. Nursery is 1,720 UK pounds per term (three terms per year).

Ages/classes: Pre-nursery is for 2 to 3-year-olds. Up to 20 children are accepted, with 2 teachers and three assistants. Sessions are held daily from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Children do not have to be toilet-trained. Nursery is for 3 to 4-year-olds. Up to 18 children are accepted, with one teacher and one assistant. Nursery sessions run daily from 9:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Children must be toilet-trained. Terms run from September through December, January through Easter, Easter through early July. School is closed the remainder of July and August.

Meals: One snack is provided by the school, one is provided by parents. Hot meals can be purchased separately.

Credentialing: All teachers are certified.

Environment: Both the pre-nursery and nursery schools are located in the British School building, in the Mokotow district. The pre-nursery is held in two adjoining rooms, colorfully decorated with a variety of craft items and books. The nursery is held in two separate classrooms, also colorful and well-equipped with play and learning tools. Children have use of a computer lab and library. The pre-nursery uses a separate playground with age-appropriate equipment. The nursery utilizes the elementary school’s playground.

Security: The entire school, including the playground, is fenced and locked. Visitors must be buzzed-in and provided with a visitor’s pass. Several security guards patrol the grounds.

Canadian Primary School of Warsaw - located at Okrezna 95, SADYBA

Curriculum: Follows a Canadian curriculum, and promotes self-motivation, self-direction and skill development. Free and open atmosphere promotes excitement for learning.

Tuition: 350.00 USD per month, 1000.00 USD for 3 months, 400.00 USD registration fee. Summer camp is offered 2 weeks in July, and is included in tuition. Uniforms are required and are an extra fee.

Ages/classes: 3 to 5-year-olds - toilet-trained preferred, but will work with special cases. There is a Junior K class for 3 to 4-year-olds, and a Senior K class for 4 to 5-year-olds. School is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., from September through the first half of July (closed August). 15 children are in each class, with two teachers and an aide for each class.

Meals: Lunch is provided, children bring one snack from home.

Credentialing: Teachers are certified.

Environment: The school is located in a quiet residential area in the Sadyba district. It is in a large three-level house, and the play/classroom areas for the Jr. and Sr. K classes are colorful and cheery, and have a home-like feel. There is an indoor gym area, and an outdoor playground has age-appropriate play equipment. As this is a primary school (up to grade 6), other classes are being held in the building, so it has a very busy, energetic atmosphere.

Security: The property is fenced and locked, and visitors must be buzzed in. A security guard is on the premises.

Curriculum: Montessori philosophy - creating order in the environment creates an orderly way of thinking, and teaches children to interact independently. Promoting concentration and control is stressed.

Tuition: 1350.00 USD to 1500.00 USD per semester for morning sessions, 1850.00 USD to 2000.00 USD per semester for whole day sessions (three semesters per year, cost depends on length of semester). A summer camp is offered for 500 zloty per week. There is a 1000 zloty registration fee.

Ages/classes: 2 ½ to 6-year-olds - children must be toilet-trained. Three classes exist, 8 children per class, one teacher and one assistant per class. Classes are mixed ages. The morning class runs from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the afternoon class runs from 1:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. School is open from September to June.

Meals: Parents take turns bringing a snack for all children each day, lunch is brought from home (not included in tuition).

Credentialing: Teachers are certified and both teachers and aides have been trained in Montessori method.

Environment: The Badowska Street school is located in a several-story building in a residential (apartment) neighborhood near Lazienki Park. The interior is extremely neat and ordered, with kid-sized equipment and facilities. A sense of absolute order and organization prevails. There is a play yard with play equipment.

Security: Although the outside gate was not locked when I visited the Badowska location, I was assured it normally is locked, and visitors must be buzzed in to the building. The school is surrounded by a chest-high wooden fence.

Child’s Play - Edyta Kentish - located at Kosiarzy 21C, WILANOW

Curriculum: The school offers individual tailored educational programs covering a number of subjects, and cooperates closely with the Polish University for Parents. Children’s natural curiosity is stimulated through a mixture of intellectual and physical activities.

Tuition: 250.00 USD registration fee, 6,950.00 USD per year.

Ages/classes: 2 to 5-year-olds - children do not have to be toilet-trained. Three classes are offered for the various age groups. Thirty children are presently enrolled in the school, with six teachers (two per class) and three other instructors offering specialized training. The school is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., eleven months a year, and is closed during August.

Meals: Three meals and a snack are provided.

Credentialing: All teachers are certified and have an MA in Pedagogy or Psychology.

Environment: The school is in a multi-story house located in a nice residential neighborhood in the Wilanow district. The play/learning areas are organized, colorful and comfortable, and a garden area with some play equipment is available.

Security: The school and play area are fenced and locked. Visitors must be buzzed in from inside.

The English Playhouse - located at ul. Plycwianska 14A (off Idzikowskiego) , telephone 0604464333. website: www.theenglishplayhouse.com

Curriculum: This is a play group as opposed to an actual preschool. The curriculum follows that of the British School, but tailors the program to toddlers. Children learn through play, with focus on painting, colors, shapes, days of the week, and other subjects. Focused play allows children to learn by doing.

Tuition: 800.00 USD for each term, which run from September to Christmas, Christmas to Easter, Easter to summer. Closed the end of June until September.

Ages/sessions: 2 and 2 months to 5 years - children do not have to be toilet-trained.

Meals: Breakfast is provided. Lunch is provided for children staying after 12.30pm.

Credentialing: All teachers have extensive experience working with children.

Environment: The playhouse is located in a family house in a residential area of Mokotow. The house has a large room used as a gym, and a garden with play equipment.

Security: The school and garden are fenced and locked. Visitors must be buzzed in from inside

The International Preschool of Warsaw - located at Zawrat 14, MOKOTOW. . website: www.preschool.pl.Telephone 843-0964.

Curriculum: the school offers a well-supervised and planned play-based curriculum drawn from both Montessori and traditional perspectives, providing structure yet encouraging self-expression and imagination.

Tuition: For 3-year-old classes, tuition is 550.00 USD for each two-and-a-half month quarter. The 4-year-old class is 700.00 USD for each two-and-a-half month quarter. There is a 50.00 USD non-refundable application fee.

Ages/classes: 3 to 4-year-olds, children must be toilet-trained. Two 3-year-old classes are offered: a morning class which runs from 8:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., and an afternoon class from 12:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The 4-year-old class runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Classes take place from the last week of August until June 15. A summer program is also offered for 70.00 USD per week, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. There are presently fifteen children in each class, with two teachers and an assistant for each class.

Meals: Only snacks are provided. Children in the 4-year-old class bring lunches to school.

Credentialing: All teachers are certified.

Environment: The school is located in a several-story house in a residential neighborhood near Pulawska street. The play areas are compact but cheery, bright and well-organized. There is an adequately-sized play area in back, with play equipment.

Security: The building and play area are fenced and locked. Visitors must be buzzed in from inside.

Curriculum: Children develop reading, writing and counting skills through fun play activities. Children learn by doing, playing and imitating.

Tuition: 4,800.00 USD per year, with a non-refundable 250.00 USD application deposit.

Ages/classes: 2 to 5-and-a-half-year olds - children do not have to be toilet-trained. Classes run from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. (children staying only until 1:00 p.m. receive a 20% discount.) The school is open from September until the end of June, and an extra June session is offered for 350.00 USD. The school is closed in August. There are two classes, one for 2 to 3-year-olds, and one for 3 and older. There are currently 18 children enrolled, with three permanent teachers and one aide.

Meals: Snacks and one hot meal are provided.

Credentialing: All teachers are certified.

Environment: The school is located on two levels in a large house in a quiet residential area in the Ursynow District. The play areas are very spacious, cheery and homey, with a variety of craft and play options available. There is a spacious backyard with some play/climbing equipment available.

Security: Although the front gates were open when I arrived, I was assured they are normally closed and locked, and that visitors must be buzzed-in. There is a large fence encircling the entire property.

Stonoga Preschool - located at Zielona 9, PIASECZNO
Telephone 756 22 13, (for 3-5 year-olds) website www.stonogapreschool.com. The 2 to 3-year-old play group takes place at the Stonoga Play Center, Zielona 17a (a few houses down).

Curriculum: The program consists of a structured environment, with emphasis on age-appropriate development following the “Creative Curriculum for Preschool” model. Children learn through play and exploration, music and movement.

Tuition: 2 and 3-year-old playgroup is 1,100 zloty per month. 3 to 5-year-old class is 2,350 zloty per month.

Ages/classes: 3 to 5-year-old class - children do not have to be toilet-trained. There are currently 16 children enrolled (maximum 20 accepted), with three teachers. The school is open from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and runs from September until the end of June (closed in July and August) After school childcare options are also available. Stonoga’s play group for 2-3-year-old toddlers has a maximum of 16 children with three teachers. Play group takes place Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. There is currently availability in both classes. The play center is open to the general public for an hourly fee during non-play group hours, and a party room is available for rent for birthdays, etc. Comfortable couches allow parents to sip coffee while watching their children play.

Meals: The 2 to 3-year-olds are given a snack, and the 3 to 5-year-olds are provided with a snack and lunch.

Credentialing: All lead teachers are certified.

Environment: The preschool is located in a two-story house in an out-of-the-way residential neighborhood in Piaseczno. It is pleasantly and colorfully arranged with a variety of play and learning tools. There is a very large outside area with play equipment and bicycles. The Play Center at Zielona 17a is equipped with abundant toddler-friendly climbing and exploration modules and toys, and has a small play yard.

Security: The preschool building and play area are fenced and locked. Visitors must be buzzed in from inside. The Play Center is locked during play group, and the playground is fenced and locked, as well.
