Text Box: Activities for ’s Mums, Tots, Bumps & Babies
Mondays – All tots up to 3 years. Up until recently the group has met at a different mum’s house each week. From October onwards (probably until Christmas) the group will be meeting in the Pre-Nursery at the (ul. Dabrowskiego 84/90) from to around 11.30. The first session was a great success with tea, coffee and biscuits for the mums, a large room full of toys for the children plus the pre-nursery staff are on hand to play and interact with them. Sarah Brett is our coordinator for this group and Laura Spindler is responsible for liaising with the Pre-Nursery.

Tuesdays – There are two options (the first being the most popular at the moment):

Kangurek play centre in the Old Paper Mill, Konstancin from . Open to all ages but more suited to tots. As well as your children being able to run around and let off some steam, part of the morning is also dedicated to a singing circle and arts & crafts where the little ones can show off their artistic talents! Aga Strojna-Rasche is our new coordinator. The play centre charges 12zl for the morning (for Mums & Tots members) or you can purchase a discount card costing 100zl for 10 sessions.

Stonoga play centre, ul. Zielona, Piaseczno from 10.30am. A number of mums have started meeting at Stonoga. It is smaller and usually quieter than Kangurek but makes a nice change and costs 8zl for the session.
Thursdays - Mini music for tots up to 3 years takes place in different houses between 10.00 and 12.00 on a voluntary basis. Cecelia Cienska is our new mini-music coordinator.
Fridays – For mums-to-be and mums with their babies (generally under 18 months old). The group meets at a different mum’s house each week between 10.00 and 12.00. Our coordinator is Carina Borin Percy.
The schedule set out at the end of the Newsletter has details of who is hosting and when, along with a list of those responsible for the various arts & crafts sessions at Kangurek. Full contact details of the co-ordinators and our hosts can be found in the mums & tots contact list. Please email postmaster@mumsandtot.com if you need a new contact list at any time. Feel free to contact the appropriate coordinator if you would like to host – go on it will be fun!
Text Box: News from the Mums & Tots Group

People News
This is the spot where you can tell us your news. We would love to hear about any new babies in the Mums and Tots Group. It’s also where newcomers to can introduce themselves and anyone leaving can say ‘goodbye’. Remember, this is YOUR newsletter! See the email addresses of the Editors at the end of this Newsletter.

Committee meeting
We held the winter committee meeting on 13 September. Thank you to Prew for hosting and to all those who attended and volunteered! As most of you already know Prew has handed over the Mums & Tots Group to some very keen and madly energetic new mums.

We would like to say a big thank you to Prew for running the group so efficiently and with such warmth over the past years whilst simultaneously bringing up 3 children! Prew you will be sorely missed.

Lindsey Wislocki is now responsible for the website, dealing with the membership list and will send out emails as appropriate. If you send anything to the main email address (postmaster@mumsandtots.com) it will end up with her.

Morag Milligan is our chief organiser and planner. Working closely with Lindsey, she will co-ordinate all the groups’ activities and make sure things happen. Oonagh Yeo who is currently standing in the wings (having recently had her third child!) will join Lindsey and Morag in running the Group.

Laura Spindler has become a liaison officer for the groups’ activities at the British School Pre-Nursery which is a very exciting development for the group.

Aga Strojna-Rasche has agreed to take over from Lindsey Wislocki and coordinate the Tuesday craft & music sessions at Kangurek.

Finally Melissa Tovell and Sarah Brett have agreed to take on the huge, challenging and obviously immensely rewarding job of putting together the monthly Newsletter! As the Editors we would like to pass on a very big thank you to Laura Spindler and Bianca Morriss for their efforts over the past year.

The other mums & tots posts remain the same; Tracey Bull - 'Mums Nights Out', Sarah Brett - the Monday group, Carina Borin-Percy - The Friday Bumps-and-Babies group, Cecelia Cienska - Thursday's mini music.

Mums’ (and Dads’) nights out
These are monthly socials to give us the chance to get together without babies and children. Thanks to Tracey for a great mums’ night out at the Blue Cactus on 28th September (the dads were also out on the 30th!). Look out for Tracey’s email or visit the website for details of the next night out.

The Book Club
The Book Club meets about once a month. The next meeting is on October 12th and the book to be discussed is Portrait in Sepia by Isabel Allende. Everyone is welcome – if you are interested in coming along call Jess Mulligan on 0693 041085.

Text Box: Going Out

For theatre, opera, concerts check out www.ebilet.pl for most upcoming events and on line booking. Or tel: 622 0060, 9:00-17:00hrs. See ‘Bit of Culture’ listing below.
For all you out there who are young or young at heart, take a look at http://www.clubber.pl which has a listing of (night) clubs across Poland and upcoming club events with links to bars, clubs, venues. New club, Klub Lucid, has recently opened in shopping mall.

Shopping/Restaurants

Having just done my second big shop using the le Clerc on-line delivery service at www.leclerc.com.pl , I thought I should let you know how easy it is. I have Prew to thank for giving me a little lesson on how to navigate my way around the website but as there are photo images of all products there are many mums out there who have little or no Polish and have managed (with only a few hiccups) to successfully do their shopping on-line. A few tips: Click ‘sklep online’ to start, search by brand name rather than trying to work out the Polish for various items and remember that ‘haslo’ (special ‘l’) means password. Finally ‘zamowienie’ means order.
Recently opened near the Red Onion furniture shop and Bo Concept in the centre is a wine bar/wine shop, Mielzynski, which stocks a large number of French and Italian wines. The owner speaks fluent English and is very helpful. The contact details are Burakowska 5/7, Robert@mielzynski.pl , tel 636 8709. We are hoping to have the next Mum’s Night Out here.
For newcomers to , when you’re feeling so lazy that you can’t even be bothered to go out to eat, try Room Service. They deliver from a huge selection of restaurants. You can order by phone (with the brochure) or on line at www.roomservicepolska.pl. Obtain your brochure by emailing office@roomservicepolska.pl. (Note from the Editors: Suparom Thai is excellent!)

Telephone

Look at www.skype.com for details on making calls using your computer. Essentially it is a way of allowing a computer with a broad band connection to serve as a telephone. You need to download free software from skype.com. If the person you are calling has Skype installed you can talk as long as you want for FREE. You’ll need a separate microphone or a phone handset that plugs into a computer port.
You can also reach non Skype users using a new service called SkypeOut. This allows you to dial nearly any cellular or landline telephone number in any country. Although not free, it’s incredibly cheap. More details on the above website.

“I cannot recommend this place highly enough, especially for families. We stayed at this small hotel/pension over the long weekend in June and had a great time. Not far from approx. 2 1/2 hours north, near Nidzica, you can stay in either a 2 bed villa or apartment in the main house. Lots for the kids to do: horse riding, canoes and boats, small private beach, fishing, swings and sand pit in garden, bikes also available for hire. Food is fantastic – French/Italian with wines to match. Babysitters also available if pre-booked.”
Website is in English at www.lemany.com. Staff extremely friendly and helpful and speak good English.

Another recommendation 60km south of in the direction of is a beautifully restored hotel/pension that has recently opened. The 8 rooms are individually styled, some very large are suitable for families. There is a large dining area with open fire and the food was pretty good (even for a vegetarian!). There is a lake in the grounds and 2 swings although more kid friendly outdoor equipment would be a plus. The hotel is less than an hour from Kazimierz Dolny, a pretty town that has historic architecture, a riverside setting and scenic surroundings!

Polish Corner

Each month we would like to add a Polish element to the Newsletter whether it is some background about one of the public holidays (as here) or customs or a favourite Polish recipe or tale.  Any ideas for next month?

All Saints’ Day

The 1st Nov, All Saints’ Day (Wszystkich Świętych) has been designated by the Roman Catholic Church as the day to pray for the Saints of the church and 2nd Nov All Soul’s Day Dzień Zaduszny or Zaduszki (All Souls’ Day) is a day of prayer for all who have died.

In Poland, Dzień zaduszny constitutes one of the most important holidays and is commemorated by praying for and remembering deceased family and friends, visiting graves, and placing flowers (usually chrysanthemums) and candles (called znicze) on grave sites and memorials. Religious Poles mark this day by going to church and bringing wypominki¸ a list of deceased family members and friends to be read from the altar during mass.

Beginning on November 1st and throughout the following week, cemeteries are filled with people, flowers, and thousands of znicze. These special candles can burn anywhere from 24 hours to a week, depending on their size. At night, during the week following All Saints’ Day, they give the cemeteries of Poland a glow that can be seen miles away.

A state holiday (and therefore a day off from work and school), November 1st has become the most travelled day in Poland. Poles will travel across the country (and even from overseas) to visit family graves. It can even be difficult to purchase train and bus tickets the day before and for a few days after the holiday.  The traditions of All Saints Day are deeply rooted in Polish culture; so much so, that a 1995 survey showed that only 2% of Poles did not plan to visit a cemetery on November 1st while some 29% planned on visiting 3-4 graves

English is fun and other volunteer programs.

Won’t you join us as a volunteer in our ‘English is Fun’ programme, sponsored by the AFW.  We are currently teaching nurses and other medical staff at three local hospitals, and children at a local children’s home.   You don’t need to be a teacher at all…we keep it fun and informal.  Plus we have materials for you to use, if you want.  You can really make a difference in someone’s life for only 1 hour per week.  Our students are so inspiring, and they really help us learn about Polish life. Also, AFW sponsors other hands-on volunteer programs, such as hospital visiting and job preparation for disadvantaged teenagers.   For all programmes, you do not need to be a member of AFW; we are simply thrilled that you want to help out. Contact Janice Rzycki at dacza@earthlink.net or 668-7342.
