MUMS AND TOTS

NEWSLETTER

May 2004

WELCOME!  A big ‘HELLO’ to all newcomers to Warsaw.  We would like to welcome you all to Warsaw and hope you will be very happy here and make lots of new friends through Mums and Tots.

MUMS AND TOTS GENERAL INFO

Mondays – All tots up to 3 years – The group meets at different houses between 1000 hrs-1200 hrs on a voluntary basis.

Tuesdays

*   Kangurek Play Centre in the Old Paper Mill, Konstancin from 10am As well as your children being able to run around and let off some steam, part of the morning is also dedicated to a singing circle and arts & crafts where they can show off their artistic talents!  (Coordinator: Lindsey Wislocki 847-8774 or 0608-477563).  The play centre charges 12zl for the morning (for Mums & Tots members) or you can purchase a discount card costing 100zl for 10 sessions.

*   Stonoga Play Centre, ul. Zielona, Piaseczno from 10.30am. A break-away group of recent Mums and Tots graduates (three years plus) has started meeting at Stonoga from about 10.30-12.30 on Tuesdays.  8zl for the session.  Everyone welcome but due to the advanced age of the children the play is a bit more robust than at Kangurek.

*   Baby Music for babies up to 18 months (or so) every 2 weeks at 10am in different mum’s houses – see schedule.

Thursdays - This is mini music morning, and takes place in different houses between 1000-1200 hrs on a voluntary basis.

Fridays – This is a special group for mums to be and babies under 18 months.  It takes place at different houses between 1000-1200 hrs.  (Coordinator: Christine Ashton – tel 847 0373).

Use the schedule printed at the end of the newsletter for the above groups in conjunction with your contact list. Please email postmaster@mumsandtots.com if you need a new contact list at any time.

For full details on all the events organised by Mums & Tots take a look at the comprehensive website www.mumsandtots.com

June 1st is Children’s Day
There will be no meeting at Kangurek. If the weather we hope to meet at Cafe Zielniek on Odynca for an outdoor play session instead. We will give you some more details nearer the time.

Change of speed limit – new law
It is worth noting that there is a new, lower, speed limit in the city: until May 1, the vehicle speed limit in downtown areas had been 60 km/hr, regardless of the time of day.  After May 1 the limit was reduced to 50 km/hr between the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.  Between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., the speed limit remains at 60 km/hr.

Mums’ (and Dads’) nights out – May 12th at NOBO’S (ul. Wilcza 58a)
We thought it would be good to do a joint night out again as everyone will be holidaying pretty soon.
Food will be ordered in advance like last time because this seemed to work well. The cost for food will be about 100 zl/person - plus drinks will make it about 150 zl per person. Please let Tracey know if you will be coming - and whether your husband will be joining us too. (Single dads or mums are very welcome!)
Call Tracey on 757 6838 or email tjcdbull@ul.it.pl to reserve your place

The Book Club
The next couple of meetings are:
11th May “What’s bred in the bones” at Helen Milnes’;
And 8th June “The five people you meet in heaven” at Tania’s house.
See your mums and tots contact list and call one of the above if you want to join in the fun.

PLACES TO GO

The Kadyny Country Club (Kadyny@Kadyny.com), about 3.5 hours north of Warsaw towards the border with Kaliningrad is a fun place for a weekend away, set in a large, wild garden among a beech forrest.  It is next door to a stud, and you can rent horses to ride and carriages with a driver.  It is about 15 minutes gentle cycling to the beach and they have mountain bikes with baby seats free of charge.  Nice indoor pool in the basement.  Bathrooms slightly old-fashioned but bedrooms perfectly comfortable.  Dog friendly and the bar/restaurant is within range of baby alarm (bring your own).  Run by a nice Brit, Daniel Vowles, married to a Polish lady.

If anyone can recommend places to stay in Poland, especially child friendly ones please let us know – we will try to do a feature every month but we need YOUR recommendations.

STOP PRESS

My youngest daughter Ola will be 3 in July & I am looking for a volunteer to take over the Mums & Tots Group from me. We already have lots of volunteers who help keep the group active. My job is to co-ordinate all of the group’s activities and be a first port-of-call for newcomers to Warsaw or to motherhood. My successor will need access to a computer, be prepared to take phone calls & emails  from newcomers, maintain the contact list of members and send emails when required. Please let me know if you think you can help – or have a word with someone you think might be suitable! The job is rewarding & interesting and I have thoroughly enjoyed the 4 years that I have been involved in the group.
